Construction

Drone technology can be used on construction sites to manage and monitor progress.  At the very basic level it can provide the client, contractor, stakeholders and management with a pre-defined status report of progress through photography and/or video on a regular basis.  It can provide all stakeholders with a realistic update without the need to visit the site.  This can be in the form of a video, photographs or a very accurate digital 3D model.  An orthophoto can be reproduced at defined intervals which highlights progress based on defined altitude and flight lines for exact comparison.

Drone technology, using photogrammetry, can also be used to measure cut and fill quantities, measure stockpiles of materials and provide as-built drawings through 2D Ortho corrected photographs.  It can also be used in the final inspection and certification process to gain access to view and inspect inaccessible areas.

The advantages of using drone technology in construction

  • More cost effective than traditional methods to obtain this type of progress imagery (i.e. manned aircraft / helicopters)
  • Accessibility – can achieve photographs to monitor progress from normally inaccessible locations
  • Safety – Photography and video of progress can we reviewed by safety team to identify and mitigate against potential hazards
  • Stockpile measurements are easily attainable and can be used to manage supply chain of materials.
  • Initial As-Built drawings can be quickly produced which is a key concern for clients, architects, engineers and the Safety File for a project.
  • Flights can be automated using mapping software and repeated at regular intervals to determine progress
